Conclusions

1.The frame-to-frame analysis in this study shows events (presumably gunshots) at about Z-190 and Z-220. Somewhat unexpectedly, it also provides strong support for an event at about Z-282 to Z-287. The present data do not examine the region around Z-160 (this precedes the images in the Commission volumes). However, both Stroscio and the HSCA experts found evidence of an event here, just as Connally begins his sudden left turn. Altogether four events are identified in the present data from the Commission volumes. This is already too many for the Warren Commission.

2.Based on frame-to-frame analysis, the evidence for a gunshot just after Z-313 is weak. This new data, however, hints at a shot near Z-321, when JFK’s head was erect. If the original film had been extensively edited after Z-300 then evidence for such a Z-321 shot might have been suppressed as a byproduct of editing.

3.An oscillation period for Zapruder’s camera (after presumed gunshots) is about five frames (3.6 Hz) in the extant film, consistent with the typical human cycle time. This is also the cycle time found by Alvarez for Brehm’s clapping. These cycle times, although consistent with the human nervous system, cannot, by themselves, provide definite proof of film authenticity.

4.Inexplicable, often large, disagreements exist between Alvarez’s study and the frame-to-frame analysis as presented here. These inconsistencies appear both in the direction and in the size of individual displacements. Furthermore, Alvarez’s graph is misleadingly smooth; it does not reflect the large inherent scatter that should be seen in his data.

5.The Muchmore data are surprisingly bland, showing little of the scatter and none of the events that are seen in the Zapruder frame-to-frame data.

6.Furthermore, the blurs, both horizontal and vertical, in the Muchmore images are often inconsistent (sometimes grossly so) with the measured frame-to-frame changes. These are often so flagrant as to be evident even on simple inspection of the images.

In conclusion, the numerous irregularities and paradoxes cited here are difficult to explain in a simple and consistent manner, if these films are authentic. On the other hand, any of them might have arisen, most likely unintentionally, as a byproduct of film alteration.

2As a child in Wisconsin I personally watched these events live on television.

3Although these newsreels distorted history, the reverse has also been true. O’Connor notes (O’Connor 1990, p. 229) that historians have also portrayed the movies with “... vague generalities and absurd evaluations.” O’Connor then provides an illuminating quote (from historian John Garraty), which O’Connor describes as “... rather extreme in its gross inaccuracies ...”. I would personally add that I have previously singled out Garraty for his simple-minded view that Oswald was the lone assassin, as portrayed in his history textbook, The American Nation (1966, p. 812). In both cases Garraty was probably guilty of relying too much on secondary sources rather than doing his own research, a problem that no doubt plagues many writers of history textbooks.
